Fly-Tying Twenty years of guiding and thirty years of commercial fly tying have given me a unique perspective on flies. I know what qualities are necessary to make a fly catch fish and be durable enough to keep catching fish. Freshwater flies are often over-dressed, both surface and sub-surface patterns. Incorporating hi-visibility posts or foam “life-jackets” can make a trout dry super visible and easy to fish while still appealing to the most selective riser.
Saltwater patterns in particular are rarely tied properly, having the wrong hook, fouling tails and improper sink rates. There is a reason Florida Keys guides want you to fish their flies and it is not because they just can’t get enough tying in. If you are spending the time, money and effort on a fishing trip, the most important connection to a fish better be right. The finest materials are used; Whiting hackle, hooks from Tiemco, Dai-Riki, Mustad and Gamakatsu. Most important is not the brand but using the right hook for the right fly.
During the Montana winter I tie flies, spring through fall I’m guiding fisherman. Orders are accepted that may be completed between November and April. I do strive to have a selection of the best patterns on hand, things such as Toads, Merkins, as well as the MO’ Better trout series flies.
I welcome custom patterns and your confidentiality is assured, your sample will be returned to you. Standard patterns can be customized for different waters and tastes. Please e-mail or call to discuss pricing and patterns. Prices are comparable with other domestic fly sources. Custom orders require a minimum of 6 per pattern and size. Payment in full required prior to work on orders. Typical Prices: ![]()
